There are an estimated 900 million small arms in circulation worldwide, produced by more than 1,000 companies from nearly 100 countries. There are 270 million privately owned firearms in the US or .9 firearms per American.

In 2009, there were an estimated 2,199,125 burglaries. Of all burglaries, 61.0 percent involved forcible entry, 32.6 percent were unlawful entries (without force), and the remainder (6.5 percent) were forcible entry attempts.
The offender was armed in 33% of all violence by a stranger and in a 16.5% of all violence committed by an intimate. About 2% of victims of violent crime used a weapon to defend themselves.
